Physical Science

Sonlight’s Science H package includes everything you need to teach a full year (36 weeks) of Physical Science and meets the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). Designed for middle school students, our Physical Science package will engage your children’s curiosity and train them to think like a scientist while exploring physics, energy, electricity, and STEM topics.

Note: Sonlight's Science F, G, and H (Earth & Space, Life and Physical Science) can be done in any order for the middle school grades. However, Science H will require a basic understanding of Algebra.

Instructor's Guide

Each Sonlight science program is built around a highly acclaimed Instructor's Guide (IG), which provides a clear, structured plan for a 36-week school year. The IG outlines what books to read, which experiments to conduct, and which videos to watch—eliminating the need for you to create your own lesson plans.

Beyond scheduling, the IG includes thought-provoking questions, explanations, and engaging hands-on activities that extend beyond experiments to deepen your child's understanding.

To keep you organized, each IG features a supply list for both the current and upcoming week—so you’ll always know in advance if you need to set aside a milk carton or gather specific materials.

For levels K-J, Instructor’s Guides also come with Activity Sheets filled with questions, simple exercises, charts, illustrations, and pictures designed to reinforce key concepts and enhance retention.

Overview of the Literature

The included Science H books provide a well-rounded introduction to physics, energy, electrical concepts and more. Each book contributes to providing a layered approach to physics by introducing broad concepts, applying them to human abilities with practical applications. Students will gain a deeper, interconnected understanding of physical science and how both the natural world and human performance is affected.

Super Simple Physics offers a broad introduction to key physics principles, including motion, forces, energy, waves, electricity and magnetism and presents them in a clear and visually engaging way. In What's Your Potential students explore the science behind their own physical and mental capabilities and makes physics more relatable by connecting it to everyday activities and personal potential.

Hands-on Science Experiments

Discover & Do: Level H Science Experiments provide hands-on activities that directly connect with the weekly reading topics, allowing students to explore concepts in a structured and engaging way. Each experiment is carefully aligned with the curriculum, creating a seamless transition from reading to practical application. This guided approach encourages deeper understanding, reinforcing key scientific principles while fostering a mindset of inquiry and discovery.

Rather than simply memorizing the steps of the scientific method, students actively engage in experiments that make science interactive and enjoyable. Each activity begins with a clear overview of core concepts, giving you and your child(ren) a big-picture understanding of the lesson’s goals. As they work through the experiments, they will explore real-world applications of scientific ideas through discussion and hands-on investigation.

Designed to promote true scientific exploration, these experiments go beyond simple demonstrations. Each begins with an observation and a thought-provoking question to spark curiosity. Students then make predictions, conduct investigations, and analyze their results. This process helps them refine their understanding, think critically, and develop an appreciation for the scientific principles they experience firsthand.

Science Supplies Kit

We've created a Discover & Do: Science H Supplies Kit that includes many of the supplies you need to conduct each experiment along with some additional household items. We gather many of the items to save you time and money. You no longer need to buy a bag of soil, for example, when you only need a cup. Items are consumable and can be shared between multiple students.

Experiment Videos

But the learning doesn't stop there! Your students will then connect to broader scientific ideas and go further with fun ways to apply and appreciate what they have discovered. The Science H package includes Discover & Do: Level H Science Experiment Videos. Included in digital-only format, these highly entertaining videos reenact all the 36 experiments your students will perform, and reinforce the concepts observed during the experiment. Filled with fascinating activities and peppered with humor, the new Discover & Do Videos bring science to life!
